Kunzite is one of those mineral gems discovered in early twentieth century California by a humble rock hunter. A sample of the unknown stone was sent to George Frederick Kunz, the chief mineralogist at Tiffany & Company. He confirmed that this was a new color variety of spodumene. The new gem was named kunzite in his honor.
